JICA Supports COVID-19 Response Efforts in Somali Region

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is assisting with the COVID-19 response efforts in Somali Region through three components: procurement of protective equipment, raising community awareness and training for professionals and para-professionals. The support will be administered in Gode, Jigjiga and Kebribeya towns through the Human Concern Organization (HCO), a local non-government organization.

JICA's support will:

  • Procure soap, washable facemasks, gloves, digital thermometers, water taps and 500 liter water tankers to benefit 400 households.
  • Install handwashing facilities at community gathering sites.
  • Increase the communities' awareness on COVID-19 and prevention methods through the dissemination of booklets, posters, banners, stickers and educational advertisements on trucks.
  • Enhance the technical capacity of local professionals and para-professionals on COVID-19 mitigation. Training will be provided to 200 individuals in the health and agriculture sectors, as well as at police stations, bus stations and other public gathering institutions.

This assistance will alleviate the economic and social pressure that is being felt due to COVID-19 in areas with low infrastructure facilities.
