MoE/JICA MUST Technical Workshop for Primary School Mathematics Textbook Developers was conducted

Under the education reform of Ethiopia implemented by the Ministry of Education (MoE), a new curriculum framework and syllabus were developed through a series of discussions and consultations among stakeholders such as universities, colleges, schools and international consultants. Following this, the Curriculum Development and Implementation Directorate (CDID) of the MoE conducted a Technical Workshop for Grades 1 - 8 Mathematics Textbook Developers in Adama online, from April 26 to 28, under the MUST Project (Mathematical Understanding for Science and Technology). This technical workshop is one of the capacity building activities of the MUST project, which targeted curriculum experts of all 12 regional education bureaus and city administrations.

At the beginning of the workshop, Mrs. Zafu Abraha, the director of CDID, presented the overall framework of education reform and the new curriculum framework and syllabus. Following this, Mr. Matebie Alemayehu, the mathematics curriculum expert of CDID, explained the cycle and procedure of curriculum document development, focusing on the student's textbooks and teacher's guides.

After that, the MUST project carried out activity-based sessions, starting from situational analysis of mathematics education in Ethiopia. The project also shared JICA's experiences in technical cooperation of supporting textbooks development in several countries as well as the experience of the development of learning and teaching materials in Ethiopia. Participants were engaged in activities of preparing an editing policy of mathematics textbooks and teacher's guides as well as making a unit plan and a sample textbook page. Through these activities, they deepened their understanding of the entire process of curriculum material development and important aspects to be considered when preparing the editing policy of textbooks so as to ensure the quality of the materials.

The participants said the workshop was very timely as they would start the development of the textbook after going back home. It is expected that the shared experience would be of great help for the participants to facilitate the textbook development process in their own regions.
