The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)and JICA Research Institute (JICA-RI) launched a two-year joint research project on transformative innovation in the summer of 2015. In the first year of the project, CSIS and JICA-RI identified two locations, the Philippines and Indonesia, for case studies and have explored the potential of transformative innovation for international development. The research considers how the specific approaches of building innovation ecosystems and smart cities can be operationalized to yield sustainable development and poverty reduction. The intention of these case studies is to explore the specific example of the innovation ecosystem in the Philippines, with special consideration of the contribution of Fab Lab Bohol, and the opportunity of transforming Jakarta, Indonesia into a smart city. ![]() Regarding the findings of the working groups and country case studies, CSIS is taking the lead in publishing a report, which looks at the how of operationalizing transformative innovation by focusing on the two concrete opportunities for developing contexts: innovation ecosystems and smart cities.
