Rice Green Revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa

  • #Books and Reports

This open-access book seeks an effective strategy that can facilitate the realization of a green revolution in rice in sub-Saharan Africa. The book is based on more than ten years of inquiries into the determinants and consequences of the adoption of new technologies in rice farming in seven countries in this region.

The book serves as a sequel to the two earlier volumes on the same topic, “An African Green Revolution,” published in 2013, and “In Pursuit of an African Green Revolution,” published in 2016. In essence, the first book conveyed the message that the high transferability of Asian rice technology made rice the most promising cereal crop in sub-Saharan Africa. The second book conveyed the effectiveness of rice cultivation training programs, which appreciably increased rice yields in sub-Saharan Africa.

This book is the third of the series: it demonstrates the substantial and sustained impact of rice cultivation training on productivity. By using panel data, it also demonstrates the existence of spillover effects from trainees to other farmers. The book includes a new assessment of the importance of mechanization in the intensification of rice farming, the modest returns of large-scale irrigation schemes, the importance of post-harvest practices in improving paddy quality, and the critical role of rice millers in improving the quality of milled rice. The empirical findings provide clear pathways to a full-fledged green revolution in rice farming in sub-Saharan Africa.
