The first follow-up training course on facilitation skills organized

Project for Sustainable Forest Management in the Northwest Watershed Area (SUSFORM-NOW) conducted the first follow-up training course on facilitation skills from 20 to 24 August 2012. This training was organized as a follow-up of the training course organized in March 2012, inviting the same group of trainees from the government offices at different levels (province down to commune levels). The sixteen actual participants at the training consisted of three from provincial level, four from district level, and nine from commune level. Most of them were either members of the project management units at provincial/district levels or officers from Commune People’s Committees who played important roles in facilitating the project activities with the local villagers.

On the first day of the training (20 August), the main trainer, Mr. Nakata, provided a review of the previous training course in March and an overview of the follow-up training with the trainees. For the subsequent three days (21-23 August), the training participants were sent to local villages where they practiced facilitation skills they had learned in actual village settings with the participation of villagers and supervision by the main trainer. The facilitation practice was done on some key topics in each pilot site of SUSFORM-NOW, including forest management implementation in Phieng Ban Village, Mon Pe wine production in Tia Ghenh C Village, and broom production in Sai Luong Village. These discussion sessions also provided the participating villagers a good chance to review and refine their activity plans. At the end of each field day, a review session was organized among the participants to summarize the lessons learned for the day.

The training was concluded on the fifth day (24 August) with the participants reviewing the learning for the entire week and making a plan for further improvement of their facilitation skills towards the second follow-up training course to be held in October 2012.

The training participants are expected to apply and practice the facilitation skills they have learned in the previous two training courses in their daily work to improve the planning and implementation of the project activities with the participating villagers.
