Working on the revision of Mothers and Child health handbook

The project for implementing Mothers and Child health handbook (MCH handbook) for scaling up nationwide will start using MCH handbooks at four pilot provinces, which are Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and An Giang in August 2011. The MCH handbook is in the process of adaptation and revision.

The history of MCH handbook implementation in Viet Nam

In 1990s, a Japanese Non-Government-Organization (NGO) started activities for supporting children in Viet Nam. The NGO proposed to use MCH handbook for early detection of disabilities for children at Ben Tre province. Starting from1998, in 2004, the MCH handbook was successfully being implemented in all areas of Ben Tre province.

The MCH handbook that will be used in the project

In 2009, Maternal and Child Health Department (MCH Dept.) of the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Osaka University Graduate School had conducted a feasibility study for implementing the MCH handbook in Ha Giang province. The version of MCH handbook used in Ha Giang will be revised and used for this project by a working group. Dr. Dinh Thi Phuong Hoa, now a Project Advisor, who designed the MCH handbook version used in Ha Giang, will play a key role in revising the MCH handbook.

The project focuses on the aim of future plan that MCH handbook will be approved and implemented nationwide. The experts of MOH, other national institutions, NGOs, International organizations and some related organizations will be requested to involve in revising the MCH handbook for a nationwide version.
