The 1st Training of Trainers

The progress of the project activity and future schedule

The Maternal and Child Health handbook (MCH handbook) and the guideline were made, and then they were sent to the printing company. We are now waiting for the finished printing products.

In the 2011 financial year, the four pilot provinces of Dien Bien, Hoa Binh. Thanh Hoa and An Giang have selected 30% of the districts of each province, and 100% of the communes of the selected districts for implementation of the MCH handbook.

From January 2012, the training courses on the contents and how to use MCH handbook for the medical staff in the area will be started. Then, from February 2012, the copies of MCH handbook will be distributed to the pregnant women and the mothers who have a child under 1 year old.

The 1st Training of Trainers

Before start conducting the training course for medical staff, the Training course of Trainers (TOT) was conducted from 14 to 17 December 2011, at Ba Vi, near Hanoi. The TOT is for provincial participants who will be trainers at the training courses for medical staff on the contents and how to use MCH handbook. There were totally 20 participants, 5 from each province who already have experience as trainers.

The purposes of the TOT were the following:
1) To introduce the MCH handbook, guideline and training manual,
2) To demonstrate some basic teaching methods.
3) To practice teaching on MCH handbook applying teaching methods.

The TOT went through with many group work sessions. Among which, there was a session reviewing the problems/difficulties that might happen when they start using MCH handbook. Then the participants were divided into four groups for working on developing and practicing their own lesson plan. The representatives of each group delivered the mock lectures in front of the trainers and other participants, who finally gave them the feedback.

At the end of TOT, Dr. Nguyen Duc Vinh, vice director of Maternal and Child Health department (MCH dept.), Ministry of Health (MOH) and the trainers conferred the TOT certification to all participants.

In the future, these 20 participants will serve as provincial core trainers in training courses on the contents and how to use MCH handbook for medical staff.
