Baseline survey started

The project is aiming at implementing the Maternal and Child Health Handbook (MCH handbook) and the guideline to the four pilot provinces of Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and An Giang. At the end of project, based on project evaluation in terms of process and outcomes, the MCH handbook and guidelines will be institutionalized for further nationwide application.

The baseline survey was planned to investigate the actual situation on Maternal and Child Health before implementing MCH handbook and guideline. The data of this survey is necessary and is very important to evaluate the project outcome by comparing the MCH situation before and after the project.

From 19 December 2011 to 7 January 2012, the survey team conducted the field survey in the 4 provinces. The subject of the survey was medical staffs, pregnant women and the husbands, the mother or care givers who has a child under 2 years old at the target area of this financial year in each province. The individual interview and focus group interview are used to collect the data of the knowledge, attitude, and practice of Maternal and Child Health from them.

The situation of the survey in Dien Bien:
The Dien Bien is 1 hour far by airplane from Hanoi, is the mountainous area that is famous of rice production, especially sticky rice. According to the staff at Dien Bien Reproductive Health Care Centre, there are 21 ethnic minorities. Thai group is the most populous, consisting of 40% of the Dien Bien's population.

On 19 December 2011, the survey team visited the Noongbua Commune Health Centre in Dien Bien Phu city, where many women from Thai group with their unique traditional hair style participated the interview. At the health center, the medical records and the medical equipment were also surveyed along with interviewing the medical staff.

The data collected will be analyzed statistically and then compiled into a baseline survey report, which is expected to be delivered in the dissemination meeting in February 2012.
