The 3rd Training of Trainers

The 3rd Training course of Trainers (TOT) was conducted from 21 to 23 February 2012 in Ba Vi district, near Hanoi. The TOT is for provincial participants who will be trainers at the training courses for health staff on the contents and how to use Maternal and Child Health handbook (MCH handbook). There were totally 20 participants, 5 from each project pilot province of Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and An Giang, who already have experience as trainers.

Almost all participants have already known the MCH handbook because the launching ceremony and training for the health staff had conducted in the provinces from January 2012. Thus, the 3rd TOT used more time to have experiences as the trainers than getting the knowledge of MCH handbook.

A example of the group presentation

Hoa Binh group was in charge of presentation on the necessary care for the newborn baby. The presenter and assistant of this group delivered basic content about necessary care for newborn. They raised questions to get information from trainees, and then summarized all information before guiding them how to record in MCH handbook.

This group received many feedbacks from the other participants:

  • They just provided basic information and content of necessary care for newborn;
  • Presenters were nervous thus they forgot some information;
  • They should write bigger and speak louder so everyone can follow their presentation;
  • They should try to use other teaching method to get attention from trainees.

Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, who was a trainer this course, added some advices as the following:

  • Presenter should not write too many letters on paper that made them were too small to read;
  • The cooperation between presenter and assistant wasn't good enough;
  • The presenter should pay attention to her intonation, adjusting her voice to get trainee attention;
  • For new trainers who are nervous end easily forget content of their presentation, they should stand near the boards;
  • If they wait for trainees' answer, they shouldn't stay too close with trainee to wait for, because it would cause pressure to trainees.

These 20 people will be trainers on the training course for health staff at each province with other 45 trainers that studied at 1st and 2nd TOT.
