Field survey for Sustainable Forest Management planning was conducted

From early January to mid-February, a field survey for Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) planning was conducted in Son La and Tuyen Quang Provinces. The survey includes the forest inventory, a survey on biodiversity (flora and fauna), and forestry cover mapping.

The survey was supported by the experts of each field who were deployed from Hanoi. It also got support from the target forest owners and the local residents, and some experts spent three weeks in the area.

All the related people gathered before the survey, selected the survey areas and moved to the areas by motorcycles. The survey was conducted based on Circular 28 on the SFM planning, and the survey methods were differentiated depending on natural forests or planted ones.

In Viet Nam, it has been in principle prohibited from cutting down the trees in the natural forests since 2014 in order to preserve the forests with the precious ecosystem, which has been decreased by conversion to agricultural fields and illegal logging. The survey confirmed that there was rare, tall broadleaf trees, and it is hoped that it will be preserved by the SFM planning.

The SNRM2 Project will develop the tangible SFM plan based on the data gotten from the survey and also through exchanging the views with the forest owners, and will support the implementation of the plan after April.
