Discussion on the possible activities for the sustainable forest management plan in Tuyen Quang and Son La Provinces

As introduced in the previous "Project news" article, in the last fiscal year, the SNRM2 Project has supported developing sustainable forest management plans (SFMP) in Son La and Tuyen Quang Provinces. In the fiscal year 2022, the Project aims to facilitate the implementation of the plans and thus had a meeting with the stakeholders in Son La on 18 and 19, and Tuyen Quang on 26 and 27 April, respectively.

The development of SFMP is stipulated in Article 27 of the Forestry Law in Viet Nam. For organizations, it is compulsory, while it is not compulsory for individuals. In order to develop an SFMP, it is necessary to conduct a survey on forest inventory, flora, and fauna and to create a map using GIS. It is rare that an organization has these kinds of experts with them, and usually, outside consultants are invited to develop a plan. Furthermore, an organization with a scarce budget has difficulty developing a plan because it cannot hire consultants.

The SNRM2 Project selected these organizations and forest owners, who cannot develop a plan by themselves, as the beneficiaries. The Project is trying to contribute to the proliferation of SFMP in Viet Nam through developing SFMP and its implementation and through accumulating experiences.

The Project will further discuss the possible activities for SFMP implementation with Son La and Tuyen Quang Provinces. The support will be commenced after getting the commitment of the target forest owners. In Hoa Binh and Lao Cai Provinces, where the development of SFMP was postponed due to the COVID-19 in the last fiscal year, the Project is planning to organize a field survey for SFMP after May.
