Prior to the SNRM2 Project, through the Project for Development of the National Biodiversity Database System (2011-2015) and the SNRM Phase 1 Project (2015-2021)^[1], JICA has supported the development of the National Biodiversity Database System (NBDS)^[2].

The SNRM2 Project continues the support for biodiversity preservation in Viet Nam, where the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) is the counterpart agency. MONRE, according to the Biodiversity Law (2008), is in charge of the management of the biodiversity database system in Viet Nam. The database system itself has been developed; however, data accumulation among the Protected Areas over the country is limited.

Given this situation, and based on the need from MONRE, the SNRM2 project supported research to provide the scientific basement for the completion of some biodiversity surveys (plant, mammal, birds, and coral), and the development of cost norms for the surveys, development of cost norms for biodiversity reporting, and review of data sharing on the biodiversity database system.

The result of the study is expected to be the official guidelines and be used in the biodiversity survey in Viet Nam.
