In the previous year, the project supported the Tan Trao Special Use Forest Management Board (the Tan Trao SUFMB) in Tuyen Quang Province to construct a nursery. This year, the project went on to support it to plant chinaberry.
Vietnam's forests are divided into three categories according to their function: (1) special-use forests, (2) protection forests, and (3) production forests. Special-use forests managed by the Tan Trao SUFMB are national parks, nature reserves, and other forests that are inhabited by precious flora and fauna or have rare landscapes. They are under strict protection but some areas that should be forests remain grassland without trees due to the past human activities before they were designated as special-use forests. The Tan Trao SUFMB is facing difficulties in the proper protection and management of the special-use forests due to budget shortages and other reasons. So, it requested the project for the support in planting trees.
Since planting non-native species such as acacia is prohibited in special-use forests, this time we planted Chukrasia tabularis, a kind of native chinaberry species. The planted area is 3.8 hectares. The local soil and climate are suitable for its growth. When it grows into a healthy forest, it is expected that it will contribute to the water resources conservation, the mitigation of climate change, the conservation of genetic resources and biodiversity, and the restoration of forest landscapes. The Tan Trao SUFMB plans to continue forest management activities such as mowing for the next three years.
