At first, immigrants were hired to work on sugar cane and coffee plantations. Gradually, some decided to grow their own fruits and vegetables on their own farms rather than work for someone else.
The Japanese would work from morning to night not only on weekdays but also on Sundays. For Christians, Sunday is a Sabbath day, dedicated to worship and rest. Because of this, some people in Christian countries criticized the Japanese for working on Sundays. However, these Japanese immigrants eventually came to be appreciated for their hard work and honesty. In Brazil, it gave rise to the expression of “Japonês garantido” meaning “trustworthy Japanese.”
