From October 22 to 24, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko visited Beijing, China, for talks with government officials, participating in the 40th anniversary ceremony of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital and delivering a lecture at Peking University.
During the meeting with Vice Minister Chen Jiachang of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the vice minister outlined their long history of cooperation together. President Tanaka expressed hope that the human networks formed through past cooperation would continue to benefit Japan-China relations in the future.

During the meeting with Chairman Luo Zhaohui of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), Chairman Luo explained China’s foreign aid initiatives and challenges. President Tanaka emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and the sharing of information between their organizations.

President Tanaka also visited the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, which was established with the cooperation of Japan, to participate in its 40th anniversary ceremony. In his remarks, he expressed congratulations on the hospital’s development into a leading medical institution in China, attributing its success to the dedication of both Japanese and Chinese officials since its opening in 1984. He furthermore voiced hope for the hospital’s continued growth and contribution to the advancement of healthcare in China and the world.

Additionally, the delegation visited the Sino-Japan Friendship Center for Environmental Protection, which was also established with Japanese cooperation, where President Tanaka met with Director-General Chen Ming. During the meeting, Director-General Chen shared updates on the center’s ongoing exchanges across government, research, and industry. President Tanaka noted the importance of such exchanges in fostering shared learning and mutual understanding between the two countries concerning environmental conservation efforts in China.

At Peking University, President Tanaka delivered a lecture entitled “World under Compound Crises and 70 years of Japan’s ODA.” Approximately 50 participants, including Chinese students, young researchers, and international students, were in attendance, engaging in a lively discussion with questions on key development challenges and human security.
This year also marks the 45th anniversary of the start of Japan-China economic cooperation in 1979. President Tanaka participated in a commemorative panel exhibition looking back on Japan-China economic cooperation to date and exchanged views with representatives from the Chinese side.
