On August 3, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the Republic of Ecuador in Quito for the Road Map for Zero Fossil Fuel in Galapagos Islands Project, a technical cooperation for development planning.

The Galapagos Islands are registered as a World Natural Heritage site for their precious ecosystem. Therefore, reducing the impact of energy use on the environment is a priority. However, most of the electricity supply on the islands comes from thermal power derived from fossil fuels. In order to realize sustainable development in the Galapagos Islands, including environmental conservation and climate change mitigation, while also taking into account the anticipated future population growth and further development of the tourism industry in the region, there is a growing need for an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, as well as for an improvement in energy efficiency.

This project will verify the renewable energy potential in the Galapagos Islands, and propose a plan to optimize hybrid power generation systems that use diesel and renewable sources, and a roadmap to realize energy efficiency.
