Signing of Grant Agreement with Madagascar: Contributing to the improvement of medical services through the provision of medical equipment

[Goal 3] Good Health and Well-Being

2023.08.18

On August 11, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Madagascar in Antananarivo, to provide grant aid of up to 1,143 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Medical Equipment at the Regional Referral Hospitals.

In Madagascar, the number of deaths caused by noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)—in addition to those caused by infectious diseases—has been increasing, with stroke becoming the leading cause of death in recent years. In particular, university hospitals (in 22 locations) and provincial hospitals (in 16 locations), which have function of core medical services in rural areas, face many challenges in terms of both structure and accessibility. Lacking the appropriate medical equipment and possessing aging apparatus, these regional referral hospitals are unable to adequately conduct thorough examinations. In order to visit hospitals in the urban areas, patients living in the countryside must spend many hours traveling, which also incurs a heavy financial burden. As a result of this burden, both in terms of money and time, it is hard for many patients in rural areas to receive adequate examinations and treatment. The need to improve access to medical care, including strengthening the system for early detection and treatment of various diseases, especially NCDs, is thus an urgent issue.

By providing medical equipment to seven core hospitals in four major regional cities in Madagascar, this project will strengthen the diagnosis and treatment systems of and improve access to medical services in rural areas of the country. In doing so, it will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 3 (Good health and well-being).
