On September 5, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Amman to provide grant aid of up to 897 million yen for the Project for Strengthening Capacity of Power System Operation.

Jordan, which relies on imports of fossil fuels from neighboring countries, is promoting the use of renewable energy as a top priority from the perspective of energy security. As a result, the share of renewable energy in the country’s power generation capacity is rapidly expanding, and power outages caused by fluctuations in the supply-demand balance due to the variability of the renewable energy output have been increasing.

Consequently, improving the stability of the electricity supply and promoting further use of renewable energy through the development of power system facilities capable of responding to fluctuations in the supply-demand balance have become an important issue.

This project will contribute to improving the stability of the electricity supply in Jordan and promoting further use of renewable energy by replacing aging protective relays (devices that detect accidents in the power system and quickly disconnect them to minimize the extent of power outages) with digital protective relays made in Japan (planned), which are highly reliable and easy to maintain, at three main substations in Jordan.

Details for the project are provided below.
