On December 21, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements with the Government of the Republic of India in Delhi to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 415,301 million yen for the following two projects.

(1) Project for the Construction of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (V) (loan amount: 400,000 million yen)

(2) Program for Japan-India Cooperative Actions towards Sustainable Development Goals in India (Phase 2) (loan amount: 15,301 million yen)

Details for the loan are provided below.

(1) Project for the Construction of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (V)

(a) Objective and Summary

The objective of the project is to develop a mass and high-frequent transportation system by constructing a high-speed rail in the style of Japan’s Shinkansen along an approximately 500-km section between Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The project will improve the efficiency of the transportation network in the region and contribute to the broad economic development of the target area, thereby also contributing to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 8 (Decent work and economic growth), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (Climate action).

(2) Program for Japan-India Cooperative Actions towards Sustainable Development Goals in India (Phase 2)

(a) Objective and Summary

The objective of the Program is to contribute to the promotion of the SDGs in India, especially in the field of social development. It will do so by supporting the efforts of the Government of India to strengthen policy frameworks and implementation mechanisms related to the SDGs, thereby assisting India in achieving these goals by 2030.
