On March 8, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe in Harare to provide grant aid of up to 2,389 million yen for the Project for the Road Improvement of the Northern Part of the North-South Corridor (Phase 2).

Located in the northern part of Zimbabwe, the mountainous section of the North-South Corridor—an international network of arterial roads in the southern part of Africa (NOTE)—has not been rehabilitated in recent years due to its highly complicated design and construction. This has resulted in frequent traffic accidents, and, with large trucks being restricted to 15 km per hour, also serves as a major obstacle to smooth logistics. Through the grant aid provided in 2018 under the first phase of this project, JICA supported the Government of Zimbabwe in the rehabilitation and widening of the mountainous section of the road 6.5 km from the border, and Japan’s advanced road-design and safety-management technologies utilized for the project were met with high praise.

(NOTE) The corridor connects the South African port of Durban to Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has the largest logistics capacity of any road network in the region.

This second phase of the project will construct a climbing lane and widen the road in the undeveloped 7.8km section that is contiguous to the section of the first phase. In doing so, it will contribute to safe and smooth logistics and to the achievement of SDGs Goals 3 (Good health and well-being), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), and 13 (Climate action).

Additionally, for the detailed design of the project, JICA already signed an agreement to provide grant aid of up to 97 million yen in October, 2022.
