On March 28, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in the capital, Dhaka, to provide grant aid of up to 2,294 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Fish Landing Center of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation in Cox’s Bazar District.

At the Fish Landing Center of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation in Cox’s Bazar, there is ongoing deterioration, with the landing pier, the fish handling area, and a part of the wharf having collapsed due to accelerating bank erosion. As a result, landing operations are inefficient, relying on the limited usage presented by the remaining, undamaged handling area, coupled with unsanitary conditions due to the use of water from contaminated shallow wells and rivers. In addition, since August 2017, the influx of displaced persons to Cox’s Bazar District from neighboring Myanmar has resulted in rising prices of daily commodities, reduced day-labor opportunities, and lower wages. Thus, there is a growing need for poverty-reduction measures for local residents (host communities) to enable them to host these refugees, who include small-scale fishery workers.

By developing the landing facilities at the Fish Landing Center of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation in Cox’s Bazar District, and providing the relevant equipment, this project will help raise the country’s quality of catches, lower the discard rate, and enhance the living conditions of fishermen in host communities. In doing so, it will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 1 (No poverty), 2 (Zero hunger), and 14 (Life below water).
