On May 28, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) for the Project for Strengthening Regional Power System of West African Power Pool, a technical cooperation project.

The West Africa region has a total population of about 440 million, and Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire support the region’s power supply through a system of electricity exchange regulated by WAPP. As electricity demand in the region continues to grow, it is essential for WAPP to develop human resources and strengthen its capacity in order to achieve a stable long-term electricity supply through regional system and market operations.

This project will contribute to the promotion of the stable use of clean and affordable electricity in West Africa through WAPP, whose secretariat is located in Benin, by providing 14 WAPP countries with member utilities to improve capacity building in regional system and market operations. Through these partnerships, the project will therefore also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 7 (Affordable and clean energy), 13 (Climate action), and 17 (Partnerships for the goals).

※The West African Power Pool (WAPP) was established by representatives of power utilities in West Africa with the vision of providing a regular and reliable energy supply at a competitive cost to the citizens of the region over the medium to long term by creating a unified regional electricity market. The member countries are the Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Republic of the Gambia, Republic of Ghana, Republic of Guinea, Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Republic of Liberia, Republic of Mali, Republic of Niger, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Republic of Senegal, Republic of Sierra Leone, and Republic of Togo.
