President Tanaka Visited Cambodia, Laos and Thailand

From October 11 to 18, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko visited the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and the Kingdom of Thailand. Through attendance at the JICA Volunteer Program 60th Anniversary Ceremony, President Tanaka confirmed the achievements of JICA’s cooperation and the strong relationships between Japan and each country.

President Tanaka attended "The JICA Volunteer Program 60th Anniversary Ceremony" in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
At the ceremony, under the theme of "Keep moving forward, connecting our hearts," President Tanaka expressed his gratitude for the cooperation between the people of the two countries to date, and expressed his hope that the JICA Volunteer Program would contribute to solving further issues in Cambodia in the future. To date, 840 JICA Volunteers have contributed to Cambodia's development in areas such as education, industrial human resource development, and health.

The ceremony was attended by approximately 200 people, including JICA Volunteers and those assigned to their posts in Cambodia. There were presentations and exhibits by JICA Volunteers introducing their activities. President Tanaka and representatives from Japan and Cambodia looked back on the years of people-to-people relationships and shared their desire to further deepen the relationship of trust between Japan and Cambodia into the future.

President Tanaka also attended “The JICA Volunteer Program 60th Anniversary Ceremony” in Lao PDR. The ceremony was attended by numerous guests from both Japan and Laos, including Lao PDR Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Finance Santiphab Phomvihane, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Lao PDR Koizumi Tsutomu, and JICA Volunteers. President Tanaka stated that the “people-to-people ties” strengthened through the activities of more than 1,100 JICA Volunteers have contributed to fostering trust between Laos and Japan. The event reaffirmed the enduring role of the JICA volunteer program in shaping people-to-people cooperation as well as addressing the social challenges faced in the world.

At the ceremony, Mr. Onishi Norio, who was the first volunteer and introduced knowledge of Japanese-style rice farming to Lao PDR, and Mr. Kato Tomoaki, who is current President of Lao Old Volunteers Organization gave remarks remembering the long history of the JICA volunteer program and its contributions to the friendship between the two countries.
