Primary objectives and outcomes

Many REDD+ countries are currently working towards achieving their Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and preparing their Biennial Transparancy Reports (BTRs), including annexes on REDD+, by the 31 December 2024 submission deadline set by the UNFCCC COP.

This event will focus on how Kenya and other countries are using satellite imagery to monitor their forests and present how they are using the results of the monitoring for sustainable forest management. Presenters include representatives from governments, international organisations, academic institutions and the private sector to share practical information to build a sound knowledge base for better forest monitoring and management and contribute to global mitigation efforts.

Content of the discussions

This side event was held in the 'Space Pavilion', where the results of Japan's forestry sector cooperation, particularly satellite-based forest monitoring, were shared, with speakers from JICA's forestry cooperation partners Brazil, Kenya and Mozambique, as well as JAXA, with whom JICA has long collaborated in forest monitoring, and a panel discussion and Q&A session was held on Japan's contribution to climate change mitigation and the operation of a specific forest alert system in the field.

In his welcome remarks, the CCF of Kenya's KFS indicated that with JICA's support, the National Reference Level which is required for REDD+ implementation was debeloped and submitted to UNFCCC and establishment of a National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) was conducted. Mr Mwangi, KFS Geo-database Administrator mentioned about some activities under on-going SFS-CORECC project including the development of tree cover monitoring systems, improvement of the NFMS,and consideratoin of timber traceability systems and of forest ecosystem services.
