On March 23, we held an event titled "Bridging Cultures, Building Careers ーUkrainian-Japanese Exchange Eventー."
Date: Saturday, 23 March 2024 14:00-16:00(JST)
Venue: JICA Ichigaya Building 2F International Conference Hall
Organizer: JICA
The number of Ukrainian evacuees currently residing in Japan is 2,098 (as of March 20, 2024), and a survey conducted by JICA in 2023 for Ukrainian evacuees indicated a need for employment support. Therefore, this event was held with the aim of helping displaced persons from Ukraine to think more concretely about working in Japan in the future.
Nearly 50 people, including Ukrainians, Japanese, and students from other countries, attended the event. The program consisted of a lecture by Dr. Korsunsky, Ambassador of Ukraine to Japan, an introduction of JICA's support measures for Ukraine, a panel lecture by three Ukrainians working in Japan, and discussions among the participants.
In the lecture by the Ambassador, he spoke about the impact of the event for Ukraine's reconstruction held by JICA in February this year, the possibility of future cooperation with Japan, and his expectations for Ukrainians staying in Japan.
In the introduction of JICA's support measures, Mr. Kobayakawa, the Head of the Office for Ukraine Crisis Response, Recovery and Reconstruction, informed the audience about JICA's past efforts for Ukraine and the future support to be provided.
In the panel lecture by Ukrainians working in Japan, three speakers talked about how they found jobs in Japan, specific episodes of their working experience in Japan, and their thoughts on their jobs.
In the latter part of the event, the participants were divided into groups of 5-7 people and had discussions based on the content of the lectures and their daily lives. They shared their experiences and thoughts and exchanged opinions about the differences in employment systems and the way to successfully work in a diverse society.
Due to the protracted war, many of the displaced persons have not been able to return home. JICA will continue its active support to Ukraine, aiming to take a multifaceted approach in view of the supports not only to Ukraine and neighboring countries but also to the Ukrainian evacuees staying in Japan.
