Accelerating Actions Toward the SDGs and Human Security: The Summit of the Future and Beyond (JICA Ogata Research Institute and UNDP Joint Webinar)

Threats such as climate change, armed conflict, pandemics, natural disasters, and economic crises are intertwined in complex ways, resulting in ever more serious and pervasive crises. In light of the ever-changing global situation, the UN Secretary-General's Report on Human Security , published in January 2024, highlights the significance of human security as “a tool to accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.”

The upcoming Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 2024 at the UN, will be a landmark event for discussing how international cooperation can effectively achieve agreed goals and tackle emerging threats and opportunities. The summit will focus on “how” to achieve it, not “what” to achieve - calling for concrete actions to deliver a better present and safeguard our prosperous future.

In this online symposium, Mine Yoichi, executive director of the JICA Ogata Research Institute, will give a keynote speech on the significance of human security in an era of complex global development landscape, based on the insights of “Human Security Today No.2” to be published by the JICA Ogata Research Institute in September 2024. In the following panel discussion, prominent speakers will discuss how best to “accelerate the achievement of the SDGs” through human security perspectives.
