The Nexus of Security and Development
Addressing Local Conflicts Before They Turn Global
Japan – EU Cooperation

The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), the European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are pleased to invite the interested audience to their joint Conference on “Addressing Local Conflicts Before They Turn Global.”

This conference is being held as part of a KAS-EJARN joint project “The Nexus of Security and Development,” which started in 2011 to analyze and evaluate obstacles and potentials for European-Japanese cooperation in such areas as post-conflict reconstruction, stabilization and development of conflict-affected countries. The project’s aim was to facilitate dialogues between European and Japanese stakeholders by organizing series of conferences in Berlin, Tokyo, and Brussels.

This second conference, this time co-hosted with the JICA Research Institute, is intended to provide a forum for scholars and practitioners from Europe, Japan and elsewhere to share actual experiences in Southeast Asia and Africa, and discuss current and future opportunities for European-Japanese cooperation in promoting peace-building and human security in post-conflict areas.

The conference will be opened by Madame Sadako Ogata, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and H.E. Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, Ambassador of the European Union to Japan.

In a first session “The Linkage between Micro Security and Development and Global Stability” will be discussed before a second and third session will take up experiences from Asia and Africa by the presentation and discussion of case studies from both regions. A final panel discussion will then summarize and elaborate on “Exploring opportunities for an EU-Japan contribution to Global Security, Stability and Development”.

Policy makers, practitioners and researchers with expertise to share or an interest in the subject are all welcome to this policy discussion forum.
