The World Bank Group has published its World Development Report (WDR) annually since 1978. Each release addresses timely topics in the areas of economy, society, and the environment and puts forward policy recommendations. On March 24, 2021, the World Bank Group published the "World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives."

Data are everywhere. But what is the data revolution doing for the 700 million people who live in extreme poverty? When data are turned into valuable information, they have the potential to improve lives, transform economies, and help end poverty. Now more than ever, the world is facing new demands for data as our principal weapon in the war against COVID-19. The latest edition of the World Development Report, “World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives”, provides a blueprint on how to harness the power of data for development, to ensure no one is left behind.

At this event, Vivien Foster, a co-director of the WDR and chief economist for the Infrastructure Vice-Presidency of the World Bank; Dean Jolliffe, a co-director of the WDR and lead economist of the Development Data Group at the World Bank; and Malarvizhi Veerappan, WDR2021 manager and senior data scientist of the Development Data Group at the World Bank; will provide an overview of the report.

Makino Koji, Deputy Director of JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development and Ito Seiro, Director, Microeconomic Analysis Studies Group, Development Studies Center, JETRO-Institute of Developing Economies will give comments on the report.
