Like international organizations such as the World Bank, and some other bilateral development agencies, JICA has been promoting evidence-based project implementation and emphasizing the application of impact evaluation as a major tool for this purpose. While impact evaluations are important tools to measure the effectiveness of development interventions, they are challenging to design and implement. What is the current state of the production and use of impact evaluations?

3ie, the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation, was established in 2008 to promote evidence-informed development policies and programs. Since its founding, 3ie has awarded over 200 grants for impact evaluations, systematic reviews and other studies that generate and synthesize evidence in over 50 countries. In addition to being a grant-maker, 3ie also advocates for, advises on and otherwise facilitates the use of evidence in development through its global “public goods” programs such as its repository of all published impact evaluations, its replications and its bursaries. We have the opportunity this time to welcome the executive director of 3ie, Dr. Emmanuel Jimenez to our institute, and he will talk about the current trends and future challenges in impact evaluation around the world in the seminar.
