Challenges Faced While Helping Male Victims of Sexual Violence in Conflict Situations

The difficulties in helping male victims of gender-based violence (GBV) in conflict situations arise from the traditional norms of masculinity and femininity and from the assumption that if a man is a victim of sexual violence, his masculinity is questionable, says Chris Dolan, director of the Refugee Law Project.

These assumptions, he asserts, are true both for survivors themselves as well as for the organizations that should be supporting them. This thought holds the victims back from talking about what happened.

We got a chance to interview him when he visited the JICA Research Institute for the seminar “Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the Conflict-affected Areas: Lessons from the Case of Refugee Settlement in Uganda and Japan” in August 2019.
