Shinichi Takeuchi

On November 6, JICA-RI Senior Research Fellow Shinichi Takeuchi won the 31st Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities in the Politics & Economics category (sponsored by the Suntory Foundation) for his recently-published book entitled The Post-Colonial Patrimonial State and Conflict in Africa: Understanding the Genocide in Rwanda (Akashi Shoten Co., Ltd. 2009). The prize is bestowed upon authors who have published books since January of 2008 and who have masterfully produced original research and commentary on social or cultural issues. Takeuchi currently leads a JICA-RI research project on "State-building in Conflict-Prone Countries."

A member of the selection committee, Takenori Inoki (Director of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies), lauded Takeuchi for his solid convictions and resolve in accurately capturing the distinct background of African state-building which enabled his robust research on Africa. Inoki praised Takeuchi's diligent execution of village-level analysis on the forms of land tenure that helped paint a precise picture of macro-level political actions and changes in micro-level social economics—all of which made the book highly-valued.

Takeuchi, along with the prize recipients of the Culture & Arts, Society & Customs, and Innovative Ideas & History categories, is scheduled to attend the award ceremony held in Tokyo on December 10.
