New Paper Release: 'The Impact of Migration and Remittances on Labor Supply in Tajikistan'

In December 2020, a paper entitled The Impact of Migration and Remittances on Labor Supply in Tajikistan was published in the Journal of Asian Economics as part of the research project Study on Remittances and Household Finances in the Philippines and Tajikistan, which was conducted by the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute). This paper was co-written by Research Fellows Murakami Enerelt and Yamada Eiji (JICA Ogata Research Institute) as well as Erica Paula Sioson.

The study aims to examine the effects of migration and remittance on Tajikistan’s domestic labor market, which is a migrant-labor contributor and remittance-dependent country, and a large number of its migrant laborers are employed in Russia. Specifically, it appraises the effects of international migration and receipt of remittances on labor supply decisions and the employment of family members that are left behind. The researchers used the control function approach to analyze unique high-frequency household panel data from the World Bank Group’s survey known as Listening to Tajikistan.
