Publication of Working Papers Nos. 216, 217 and 218

The JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development publishes working papers on the results of its research projects with the aim of stimulating active discussion. In January 2021, working papers nos. 216, 217 and 218 were published.

Working Paper No. 216, "Microfinance Competition and Multiple Borrowing: Evidence Using Panel Data from Bangladesh," written by Minhaj Mahmud, Sawada Yasuyuki and Tanaka Mari, is based on the results of the research project "Empirical Study on Risk and Poverty in Bangladesh." This paper analyzes the causes and consequences of multiple borrowing in rural Bangladesh using long-term household and village panel data from 2000 to 2014.

Working Paper No. 217, "Developing Textbooks to Improve Student Math Learning: Empirical Evidence from El Salvador," written by Maruyama Takao and Kurosaki Takashi, examines the effectiveness of the package of interventions, including the distribution of textbooks that are carefully designed to improve student learning in math through a 2-year randomized controlled trial in El Salvador.

Working Paper No. 218, "Resilience against the Pandemic: the Impact of COVID-19 on Migration and Household Welfare in Tajikistan," written by Shimizutani Satoshi and Yamada Eiji, is based on the results of the research project "Study on Remittances and Household Finances in the Philippines and Tajikistan." This paper examines from various angles the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on households in Tajikistan, a country that depends on remittances from migrant workers, using a monthly household panel dataset that covers the periods both before and after the COVID-19 outbreak.
