JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development publishes working papers on the results of its research projects. These papers are intended to stimulate active discussion.

The Institute has published Working Paper No. 231, “Unpacking the Influence of Business Approaches to Development on the Expansion of Women’s Choices and Empowerment: A Case Study of a Handicraft Business in the Kyrgyz Republic,” written by Shimoda Yukimi. This paper explores a development project that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted in the Kyrgyz Republic in collaboration with a Japanese retail and manufacturing corporation. The felt business upon which they collaborated eventually involved hundreds of female producers. This study reveals both the economic and noneconomic effects of the business and the impacts on producers, families, and communities at large.
