JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) has released the video of a lecture by Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz of Columbia University, Nobel Laureate in Economics, titled “Human Potential, Security and Freedom, and the Good Society.”

This lecture is based on Stiglitz’s special contribution, “Human Potential, Security and Freedom, and the Good Society,” featured in third issue of the JICA Ogata Research Institute’s flagship report “Human Security Today: Measuring Human Security,” whose Japanese edition was published by the JICA Ogata Research Institute in March 2026. The English edition is scheduled to be published in September 2026.

In his contribution, Stiglitz draws on the themes of his latest book, “The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society,” to explore the multifaceted nature of freedom. He emphasizes that true freedom rests on freedom from fear and on the assurance that people can live lives in which they realize their potential.
