Special Lecture

On October 5 and 6, 2022, Dr. Kitaoka Shinichi, Special Advisor to the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and former JICA President, gave JICA Chair Special Lectures to students at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology (PJAIT) and the Warsaw School of Economics in the Republic of Poland.

From 1989 to 2008, JICA implemented cooperative programs with the Republic of Poland in a wide range of fields with a primary focus on technical cooperation to contribute to the transition to a market economy and a smooth transition to democracy. As a part of this cooperation, PJAIT was established in 1994.

Dr. Kitaoka gave a special lecture titled "Meiji Restoration: Full-start of Japanese Modernization" at PJAIT. During the ensuing Q&A session with students, participants discussed the important turning points for Japan during the momentous transition from national isolation to modernization, and how Japan became the global power it is today. Through special lectures and discussions, students deepened their understanding of how Japan modernized into a free, democratic, and peace-loving nation while maintaining its traditions and national identity.

At the Warsaw School of Economics, Dr. Kitaoka gave a lecture titled "Recent developments of Japan's security and foreign policy", followed by a lively discussion with students. Various topics related to current events and development, such as the international framework to resolve the current war in Ukraine and Japan's "Quality Infrastructure Investment" through ODA, were discussed. The students deepened their understanding of Japan's efforts to strengthen its national security through diplomacy.

Through these special lectures, students from both universities had the opportunity to further their understanding of Japan's history, its modernization process, and its foreign and security policies.
