The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will dispatch a survey mission to Mauritius from Oct. 24.

In response to the grounding and oil spill that occurred on the southeast coast of Mauritius in July this year, JICA dispatched three consecutive Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Expert Teams to provide advice on the oil spill response and to undertake a rapid impact assessment on the ecosystems. The survey mission, starting from Oct. 24, aims to follow-up on the JDR activities and conduct a more comprehensive and detailed investigation on environmental impacts on the ecosystems and the socio-economic impacts on the local communities that engage in fisheries and tourism. JICA will consider a medium and long-term cooperation framework through this survey.

JICA will support the efforts in Mauritius from the perspective of mitigating the negative social and economic impact of the vessel grounding, as well as conserving the coastal ecosystems registered as a Ramsar wetland site, which is home to one of the world's richest diversity of corals and other marine life.
