[Tokyo, Japan] – To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the peace agreement between the government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Mindanao, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organizes a symposium at Tokyo, bringing together key stakeholders, including high-level officials from the Philippine government and the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), to overview the progress of the Mindanao peace process and to discuss the challenges and opportunity for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
After 17 years of peace negotiations since 1997, GPH and MILF signed the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) in March 2014. Since then, various results have been steadily achieved, based on CAB. It will be followed by the first election for the Bangsamoro Parliament in May 2025, and subsequently the establishment of the Bangsamoro Government.
The Japanese government through JICA have supported for peace and development in the region even before CAB concluded. The assistance of JICA has focused on governance, human resource development, regional and community development as well as normalization, while building mutual trust.
Distinguished speakers and panelists will share their insights and experiences, and overview the progress of the peace process and efforts made by GPH and MILF/BTA over the past decade, and also discuss the visions and challenges for the lasting peace, stability and development in BARMM.
The Bangsamoro Peace Process that has been progressed through dialogue and collaboration with mutual trust is the remarkable model for conflict resolution in the world. The Symposium will provide an opportunity to consider about a chart of the world peace.
