On Thursday 20th February 2025, the Department of Transport (DOT) organized a seminar in Port Moresby for the “Project for Capacity Development of Department of Transport in Port Policy and Administration Phase 2”. In the morning session, DOT staff and JICA experts presented the Project overview, Port Information Database structure, preliminary analysis of data, and the utilization of newly developed Port Information Database based. In the afternoon, the representatives from PNG Ports Corporation Ltd (PNGPCL), the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) and Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM) discussed their visions for digitalization of their own operations and ambitions for the establishment of data ecosystem for maritime governance and GoPNG.

Participants were from over 18 stakeholders including representatives from government agencies and development partners and actively discussed how we can best utilize the Port Information Database for a more efficient and effective port policy and administration which will play a key role in driving sustainable and economic development of PNG. The valuable insights and feedback shared in the seminar will contribute to the sustainable database’s operation including data management and utilization.

JICA PNG Office wishes that DOT and all stakeholders will utilize the Port Information Database to formulate more sound policy based on evidence for people of PNG. Special thanks to DOT, relevant agencies such as PNG PCL and NMSA, and JICA expert team for their coordination and efforts which have led us to the success of the project.
