Ethiopia is a large country with a population of approximately 91million, located in the Horn of Africa. The gross national income (GNI) per capita is US $400 (2012), and the country has shown continuous high economic growth averaging about 7.8 percent since 2009. Nevertheless, country's economic environment remains fragile due to agriculture dependency on rain-fed cultivation by small-scale farmers, an immature manufacturing industry, inflation, and an increasing amount of foreign debt. Ethiopia also faces severe situations such as chronic food shortage, an inadequate supply of safe water, undeveloped social infrastructures which cause disparity between urban and rural areas, and limited social services including education and health. JICA's cooperation is primarily focused on 1) agriculture and rural development, 2) private sector development, 3) infrastructure development and 4) education.
