The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and JICA Research Institute (JICA-RI) launch their year-two joint research project report titled “Harnessing the Data Revolution to Achieve the SDGs: Enabling Frogs to Leap.”

This report analyzes the challenges and opportunities that exist in the pursuit of the data revolution and provides recommendations to the international community to play a constructive role in the data revolution.

In this public seminar, we will focus on data technologies which have become developed rapidly in recent years and discuss how this will change our way of working on the way to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a number of data technologies is increasingly accessible and affordable for developing countries, it may not be necessary for developing countries to follow a linear progression of development laid out by OECD countries if they successfully deploy ‘leapfrog’ data technologies that vault them forward several steps on the development continuum.

In the keynote lecture, Kazuhiko Takeuchi, the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies will give a presentation about what we should do now to promote the SDGs. In the following panel, Haishan Fu, Director of the Development Data Group of the World Bank, Wah Wah Maung, Director General of Central Statistical Organization of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Shinya Kukita, Chief Engineer of NEC Corporation will discuss about ideas to achieve the SDGs and the challenges and the opportunities to promote “leap frog” data technologies in developing countries.

A launch event at CSIS headquarters at Washington D.C. was held on September 11. You can watch this past event and download the report from the CSIS website below:
