Amidst the extensive socioeconomic and political consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic still in effect, the Russian invasion of Ukraine broke out this February. This has created a crisis on top of another crisis, or compounded crises that have put the world into an extremely precarious situation.

For example, stagnation of exportation from Russia and Ukraine following the invasion is causing a global supply shortage of food and energy, which is greatly impacting people’s livelihoods in the world. Furthermore, in addition to price surges, significant currency depreciations and worsening national debt situations, the global macroeconomic outlook is worsening as well, as seen in the deceleration of economic growth in China. Moreover, serious challenges that were already in place before the invasion, including the delay in addressing climate change, are accumulating.

Today’s compounded crises have more serious impacts on developing countries, in particular, on vulnerable populations. We must not forget that the crisis is posing significant threats for human security.

This session will identify various global challenges under today’s compounded crises from the perspectives of state security, economic security, and human security and then discuss measures to enhance resilience and stability.
