On September 2, an international conference entitled “ASEAN+3 Connectivity: Towards an Integrated East Asia” was organized by the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing, China. The conference brought together researchers and practitioners from ASEAN and three countries—Japan, South Korea, and China. From Japan, JICA-RI Deputy Director Naohiro Kitano attended the event.

Participants from ASEAN+3 shared information, and actively discussed: the progress on the Master Plan of the ASEAN Connectivity towards ASEAN integration in 2015; and the present status and challenges for cooperation between ASEAN and the three countries.

In the session of ASEAN+3 connectivity and regional integration, Kitano remarked that Japan’s economic cooperation towards ASEAN countries was a model of synergy of trade, investment and aid, with focus on development of both urban and rural areas and cultivation of human resource. He also explained JICA’s efforts to enhance ASEAN connectivity.
