The Institute of International Education (IIE) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) jointly released a book entitled Global Perspective on International Joint and Double Degree Programs in January 2014. JICA Senior Research Fellow Takako Yuki contributed a chapter on “Collaborative Degree Programs in East Asia: Findings from a Survey,” where she introduces the study outcomes from the JICA-RI project.

Yuki’s paper is based on the results of the JICA-RI project on “Analysis of Cross-Border Higher Education for Regional Integration and Labor Market in East Asia” in one of the four areas of “Aid Strategies.” With a focus on higher education that is provided across the borders of East Asia, it examines the expected outcomes along with the risks and challenges for the leading universities in the region as well as the international collaborative programs.

The book points out the importance of enhancing the quality of education and promoting cross-cultural understanding in the collaborative degree programs. It also stresses the need to develop highly collaborative activities so that the respective partner countries can advance their economies and institutions of higher education.
