JICA-RI Releases a Collection of Working Papers for TICAD V in Collaboration with Prof. Stiglitz-led IPD

JICA-RI has conducted a joint research with the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD), led by Professor Joseph Stiglitz of Colombia University, a winner of the Nobel laureate in Economics. The findings from the joint research on economic transformation of Africa are compiled in the form of a collection of working papers for upcoming the fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V).

With Prof. Stiglitz introducing the industrial policy in Africa, other papers are written by: Professor Danny Leipziger of George Washington University; Dr. Shahid Yusuf, Chief Economist at the Growth Dialogue; Prof. Sakiko Fukuda-Parr of the New School; and Prof. Ha-Joon Chang of the University of Cambridge. From JICA-RI, Senior Research Advisor Akio Hosono and Research Fellow Go Shimada contribute to the writing.

TICAD has played a pivotal role as a venue for international debate on African development since the first conference held in 1993. Africa has been achieving rapid economic growth in recent years, whereas the continent has faced challenges such as narrowing disparities and maintaining public safety. At the TICAD V meeting, discussion will be focused on how African countries and the international community can collaborate for realizing long-term and sustainable development.

It is our hope that the papers will be a helpful guide to those who have an interest in African development, and that our work will promote further discussion on the future of Africa.
