SDGs, Transformation, and Quality Growth: Insights from International Cooperation

  • #Books and Reports

The world is currently facing multiple challenges, such as pandemics, extreme poverty, climate change, and severe human security violations. Under these circumstances, few people would disagree with the idea that the values and practices embodied in the concept of quality growth are now required more urgently than ever.

This book offers insights into the idea of quality growth and explores its essential attributes, such as inclusiveness, sustainability, and resilience. It discusses quality growth in the context of transformation, which is the key driver of growth and a determinant of varied attributes of advancement. By applying a case study approach, this volume distinguishes itself from some previous literature that discusses general policy to achieve quality growth.

This volume shows that the enhancement of endowments, transformation, and quality growth do not occur automatically. These processes are normally endogenous; however, they need to be catalyzed or facilitated by well-designed strategies and effective approaches to implement such strategies. Case studies provide insights into such strategies, approaches, and the main actors involved in the transformation process.

This volume studies the relationship between essential endowments, transformation, and quality growth (with its attributes intimately related to SDGs) from three different angles to identify appropriate and promising strategies. First, it discusses strategies for enhancement of essential endowments and strategies to trigger and catalyze transformation considering such endowments. Second, it focuses on outstanding cases of transformation to analyze how essential endowments and other crucial factors interact in the transformation process. Third, it examines the case of sub-Saharan Africa, where jobs and inclusivity have not necessarily accompanied the growth of GDP as expected.

The book further explains effective approaches toward quality growth, such as the creation of learning societies, land readjustment for urbanization to generate growth, environmental sustainability, and disaster risk management.

The lessons illustrated in this volume as learned by particular counties may not be directly applicable to other societies. However, they may be efficacious in helping individual nations establish their own quality growth strategies to address specific challenges.
