Tokyo Center

Activity Information

JICA Tokyo is an international center that was established in Shibuya, Tokyo in 1985.

It is the largest of all nine JICA centers established throughout Japan, both in terms of activity scope and accommodations.

Since it was founded, JICA Tokyo has conducted training programs to communicate Japanese knowledge and technologies to more than 50,000 personnel from developing countries. The center also serves as a place for local residents to learn more about Japan's international cooperation and JICA activities.

In April 2014, the JICA departments in charge of public participation programs (such as regional collaboration and NGO collaboration) merged in order to better carry out activities related to the promotion of volunteer dispatch and the private sector collaboration in partnership with five prefectures (Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, Gunma, and Niigata).

Knowledge Co-Creation Programs

Sharing Japanese knowledge and technologies with the world

JICA Tokyo is the largest training institution in Japan, and carries out some 480 training courses annually in a variety of sectors, including economic policy/governance, health, transportation, environmental management, and more. The courses are carried out with cooperation from more than 180 related Japanese organizations, bringing in about 4,000 technical participants from more than 120 developing countries across the globe.

Dispatch of Overseas Volunteers

Change the world, Change yourself.

"JICA volunteers live and work with local people, speak local languages, and promote mutual understandings,

and all with the purpose of encouraging self-help efforts in the community. They tackle national issues such as poverty, health, educational concerns and so on, working on the grassroots level with the aim of furthering economic and social development."

JICA Partnership Program

Making international cooperation part of Japanese culture

With JICA Partnership Program, JICA supports and jointly implements cooperation activities in developing countries which are planed by Japanese NGOs, Japanese local governments, and Japanese universities uitilizing their accumulated experience and techniques. With a project which serves local people directly as a target, this program are classified into three types.

Support for Development Education

Understanding global issues and doing something for them

JICA has the following three priorities when it comes to supporting development education and education for international understanding.

(1) Returning knowledge to society (enhancing Japanese society with knowledge of developing countries)
(2) Providing opportunities for thought (What can I do?)
(3) Bridging gaps (promoting development education in respective areas )

Collaborations with NGOs

Comprehensive support for international cooperation through the power of local citizens

Advisors with expert knowledge are dispatched to domestic NGO offices, overseas activity sites, and so on in order to provide the necessary consultation and guidance in line with individual needs. Advisors also help NGOs' draft action plans and carry out training for the purpose of strengthening their organization and/or resolving organizational management issues.

Partnerships with the Japanese Private Sector

Energizing Japan and emerging economies through private sector collaboration

Private companies and private-sector financing are becoming an increasingly critical part of economic growth, sustainable social development, and poverty reduction in developing countries. JICA supports developing countries with the help of the superior products and technologies of private companies with the goal of resolving developing issues while bolstering the Japanese economy at the same time. A broad range of support options are available, depending on how prepared partner companies are for overseas expansion.
