Activities in Iraq

Capacity Development Program

Third Country Training Programs (TCTP)

Effective Operation and Maintenance System Using GIS

Long lasting conflicts and successive economic sanctions caused water supply and sewage systems in Iraq to become obsolete and malfunctioned.

Compared to the situation before the Gulf War, per-capita water supply amount was declined by half in urban areas and by about one third in rural areas. About 400,000 m3 of waste water is being discharged directly to the Tigris river without due treatment every day. This affected a lot to the people around the region and caused to increase the health problems.

The Government of Japan has supported Iraq reconstruction in this field, i.e. provision of compact water treatment units, water tankers, special vehicles of garbage disposal and sewage cleaning and so forth.

In parallel with those assistances in facilities, institutional capacities of water supply authorities have to be strengthened. Among various needs, improve operation & maintenance and reducing Non-Revenue-Water (NRW) is one of the most urgent issues to be addressed.

JICA, in cooperation with Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) , decided to carry out the capacity development programme in this field.

The purpose of this Course is to introduce GIS to a priority area (Sadr City) in Baghdad Mayoralty. Participants will learn how to develop effective Operation and Maintenance (O&M) system using GIS.

Japanese experts facilitate the process of developing GIS, effective O&M system and action plan. Participants are expected to collect GIS data and exercise system modification and data updating in practice stages during the trainings intervals in Baghdad. (Between training stages in Amman)

Participants are also expected to practice an action plan on for O&M and NRW on the ground which is to be studied and developed through stage-1 to stage-6 of the Course.

    - Through the Course, the Participants will:
  • (1) Understand and get familiarized with GIS for effective O&M and NRW reduction for water supply,
  • (2) Understand how to establish and update GIS database,
  • (3) Understand how to reduce NRW and to utilize GIS for effective O&M system,
  • (4) Set up a manual for effective water supply O&M system using GIS and an action plan for reducing NRW,
  • (5) Practice an action plan formulated thorough the Course.
