Introduction of Projects

Improvement of the Medical Equipment of the Regional Level Emergency Centers

Background of the Project :

Based on the Long-term Strategy for the Development of the Albanian Health System in 2004 and Strategy of Emergency Medical System Reform in Albania launched in June 2007, the Government of Albania has set the goal to establish emergency medical service system as well as to improve the emergency sections at regional hospitals in order to provide basic and standard emergency medical services nationwide in Albania.

Under such circumstances the Government of Albania has requested grant aid to the Government of Japan for emergency medical equipment. The Government of Japan approved the project on February 2, 2010 and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided emergency medical equipment, diagnostic imaging equipment, clinical laboratory equipment, ambulances and emergency lifesaving equipment to the 14 medical emergency centers nationwide for the modernization of the medical emergency centers.

  • Project objective : To improve emergency medical service of the regional level in Albania
  • Project sites
    • Emergency Unit of Pediatric Hospital of "Mother Theresa"
    • Emergency Dispatch Center in Tirana
    • Regional Hospitals in Lezha, Kukes, Diber, Durres, El;basan, Fier, Berat, Vlore, Gjirokaster, and Korce
    • District Hospitals in Lishnije and Sarande
  • Duration : February 2010 − December 2012
  • Executing Organization : Ministry of Health
  • Activities
    • To procure ambulances and medical equipment installed into ambulances and in emergency hospitals
    • To provide consultant service for drafting project design and for procurement of equipment
    • To carry out training for preventive maintenance of medical equipment
