Inauguration Ceremony of the Project for the Construction of New Buildings for the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology of the National University of Timor-Leste

On 14th January 2020, inauguration ceremony of the Project for the Construction of New Buildings for the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology (FEST) of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) funded by the Government of Japan was held at Hera Campus of UNTL.

The ceremony was organized by the UNTL and attended by: Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, H.E. Mr. NAKAYAMA Norihiro; Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture, H.E. Mr. Longuinhos dos Santos; Chargé d' Affairs, a.i., Embassy of Japan in Timor-Leste, Mr. HIGASHIMOTO Shingo; other government members; Rector of UNTL, Dr. Francisco Miguel Martins; lecturers; students and staff of UNTL and local communities.

The objective of this project is to contribute to an improvement in the learning environment and industrial human resources development of Timor-Leste.

The construction work was implemented from February 2018 to October 2019 (19 months), by Rinkai Nissan Construction Co., Ltd under the supervision of Yamashita Sekkei Inc. and Intem Consulting, Inc., with a grant amounting to 2.231 billion yen (approximately USD21 million). The project employed 122 local workers.

The project consists of constructing: (1) 20 classrooms; 15 classrooms that accommodate 40 people and 5 large classrooms that accommodate 80 people, (2) auditorium with 400 seats, (3) library, (4) offices for Dean and lecturers, and (5) access way for people with disability. Also, 39 types of Equipment were handed over on July 12th for classrooms and laboratories for five departments (Informatics Engineering, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electric and Electronics Engineering).

In addition to the construction of the new building, JICA is also conducting a Technical Cooperation Project to FEST through a project called "the Project for Capacity Development of Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology, UNTL, Phase II (CADEFEST Project Phase II)", which is supported by several universities professors from Japan. The purpose of the project is to enhance the capacity of education and research in FEST. The project was started from August 2016 and will end on March 2022 (5.5 years).
